The Meghalaya government has recently scrapped the tender for the redevelopment, operation, and maintenance of the Orchid Lake Resort at Umiam Lake, which was planned to be transformed into a 5-star luxury property. The decision to annul the tender came due to significant changes in the project parameters, including alterations in the land area and the addition of a new project location.
In light of these changes, the Tourism Department plans to initiate a fresh procurement process reflecting the revised project scope, with a new Request for Proposal to be issued at a later date. This move signals the government’s intent to realign the project with updated requirements and ensure an improved development framework for the iconic Umiam Lake area.
Separately, the Directorate of Tourism has called for expressions of interest from individuals, communities, or clans interested in purchasing or leasing a minimum of 10 acres of land for tourism development in Sohra, indicating a broader push toward tourism growth in the region.
This step to reconsider and relaunch the tender underscores the government’s commitment to carefully managing and enhancing Meghalaya’s tourism potential while adapting to changing project demands and opportunities.
