Guwahati, 7 May: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma presided over a high-level review meeting with the Department of Education today to review the progress of major schemes such as free college admission, Nijut Moina, distribution of scooty/cycle, tutor recruitment, and model schools in tea garden areas.
Key Decisions & Updates:
✅ Free College Admission:
- Ration cards will be accepted as proof of income for students who apply under the scheme of free admission, making paperwork easier for financially backward families.
✅ Nijut Moina Re-application:
- All the students covered under the scheme of Nijut Moina will have to re-apply so that updated beneficiary lists and easier implementation take place.
✅ Scooty for Meritorious Students:
- Students achieving 80% or more in Higher Secondary (HS) exams are eligible to apply for the scooty distribution scheme, promoting academic performance.
✅ Tough Screening for Tutors/Teachers:
- The department is instructed to conduct stiff screening in tutor and teacher recruitment processes.
- Promotions are to be done following UGC norms to ensure quality standards.
✅ Model Schools in Tea Garden Areas:
- New positions will be created to fill model school vacancies in tea garden areas, enhancing access to education for disadvantaged students.
Why This Matters:
These programs seek to increase enrollment, recognize merit, and improve education quality throughout Assam. By streamlining income proof requirements and rewarding high performers, the government is making education more aspirational and inclusive.
