Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that three foreign nationals have officially received Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019. This is among the first cases of CAA implementation in the state, making it a notable development in Assam’s political and social landscape.
The CAA allows persecuted minorities from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh—Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians—to seek Indian citizenship if they arrived before December 31, 2014.
While CM Sarma hailed the move as a step toward humanitarian relief, the issue remains sensitive in Assam, where fears of demographic imbalance and cultural erosion have fueled strong opposition to the Act.
With more applications pending, this development signals the beginning of a new phase in Assam’s CAA journey, likely to spark further debates across the state.
